What is Yoreshire?
The word 'yore' means time long past. Vocabulary.com said it best by saying that yore means olden times. Yore has a sentimental or nostalgic tone to it, implying that the olden times being described are in some way superior to the present day. I happen to agree.
I created this name to highlight two main concepts of my preschool program. One, being, yore. That is a very key aspect to my Waldorf influenced preschool, where domestic activities such as laundry, baking, cooking, gardening, cleaning, sewing, and art are the focus of day-to-day activity. Telling stories of dragons and fairies and fairytales in a way that will captivate a young audience with rich language and song is a perfect way to teach. The second, being, shire, which gives a visual in most minds of community, a village if you will, of comfort, of peace, of wooden objects, and of food and fellowship, and of course, adventure.
Preschool Bible Verse
When I think of Yoreshire, I think of trees and the forest. Living in the south, sometimes those trees are large oaks with hanging moss. With the thought of trees, I was reminded of John 15:5, 'I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.' UGTechnologies.com says that, 'our union with Him is essential to a fruitful life, and we must remain actively connected to Him to achieve greatness according to His will.'
Yoreshire's vision
What greater thing could I do than to create a beautiful place that allows a child to remain in their imaginative state while learning household responsibilities, learning to care for others and animals, and learning that all the beauty around them is because of God's creation? Yoreshire Christian Preschool strives to be a magical place in a child's upbringing that will bring joy into their daily routine. Yoreshire preschoolers will set forth into the world with an open mind and love for learning, a kind heart and a joy filled soul, and a strong creative mind to take on the challenges of the world.
Another favorite verse is Acts 9:2
'and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.'
I read that and said, I belong to the Way. It's a beautiful and terrifying thought.
